First Light is a curated performance series that brings contemporary circus into direct dialogue with its audience. Born from a series of weeklong creations at 3AM Theatre’s home studio in Queens, the project began as an artistic laboratory where a rotating ensemble could develop new material, experiment collaboratively, and invite audiences into the creative process. Across four editions in 2025, these residencies established the sonic palette, visual language, and central themes of the work. In the fall of 2025, First Light was developed into a full evening-length production, premiering at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine, before making its New York City debut at Circus Academy New York in Brooklyn.

At its heart, First Light is a work about wild ambition, discovery, and the grief that can follow our pursuit of the unknown. Through contemporary circus, live music, movement, and immersive design, the piece explores our desire to reach beyond what we know and make contact with life’s greatest mysteries. The work is deeply connected to the artists on stage, whose individual practices, perspectives, and collaboration continue to shape the production as it evolves.
